(Springfield, Ill) – The Affordable Assisted Living Coalition (AALC), which represents approximately 10,000 seniors and persons with disabilities, announced today that its board of directors has chosen Karin Tilly Zosel as the organization’s new Executive Director. She takes over today, replacing AALC’s Executive Director, Wayne Smallwood, who is retiring after serving 14 years as the organization’s lead.

“After a yearlong search, we are excited to have Karin come on board. Her background in state and federal government and her work in higher education makes her a great fit. She brings leadership and experience that will help her position the Supportive Living Program well in the ever-changing landscape of assisted living and long-term care. She has a deep appreciation for the important mission of the AALC and I feel confident that she will help grow the organization over the coming years,” said Wayne Smallwood, retiring Executive Director of the Affordable Assisted Living Coalition.

In 2018, former Governor Rauner named Zosel as the Acting Director of the Illinois Department of Insurance (DOI). She began working with DOI in 2015 and during her tenure she has held a variety of roles including Executive Director of Get Covered Illinois, the consumer assistance program for the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace created under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) as well as Chief Operating Officer overseeing all department operations. She also served as the Vice President at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois and as an Intelligence Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in Washington, DC.

“I look forward to leading the AALC in the new decade and building on the great work that Wayne Smallwood has accomplished,” said Zosel. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to use my experience and skills to promote, strengthen, and grow our partnerships with the Supportive Living Program community and its vendors.”

Zosel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Yale University and a Master of Arts in International Policy Studies and Certificate in Nonproliferation Studies from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. She earned her Juris Doctor from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. In May 2018, she earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from the Charles Widger School of Law at Villanova University.

She currently resides in Sherman, Illinois with her husband and three children.
