Session III. 3:00-pm-3:50pm: Becoming an Ally - Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Speaker:
Sunny Nakae, MSW, PhD, Senior Associate Dean – Equity, Inclusion, Diversity, and Partnership, Associate Professor – Medical Education California University of Science and Medicine

Description: Many trainings about diversity, equity, and inclusion focus on awareness and recognition of different perspectives, identities, and lived experiences. What comes next? How can we put this learning into action and contribute to an inclusive culture at our places of work and learning? Once we have become aware of microaggressions, micro insults, and the various forms of oppression and mistreatment within our institutions and professional spheres, there are skills we can learn and practice to disrupt these harmful norms. When something happens that goes against our values, there is often palpable discomfort, fear, and uncertainty about what to do. We can, as allies, step up to these moments and act in a positive way to safeguard ourselves and our colleagues from further harm.

 Learning Objectives

  • Discuss ally-ship and what being an ally means
  • Increase awareness of how identity shapes lived experiences
  • Recognize the importance of allies in combating and correcting injustice and mistreatment
  • Explore the ally framework and lifelong ally skills
  • Commit to continued development and implementation/action of ally skills
